In football squares, not every square has the same chance. Because of how football is scored, some last digits come up far more often than others.
Why some numbers win more
Most points in football come from touchdowns with an extra point (7) and field goals (3). Scores built from 3s and 7s, like 3, 7, 10, 14, 17, 20, 21 and 24, end in a small set of digits. That's why a few digits show up again and again.
The strongest digits
- 0: every team starts at 0, and 10, 20 and 30 are common scores.
- 7: one touchdown with the extra point, plus 17 and 27.
- 3: one field goal, plus 13 and 23.
- 4: 14 and 24 are very common.
- 1 and 6: 21, 31, 6, 16 and 26 come up often too.
The weakest digits
- 2 and 5: it takes an unusual mix of scores, like a safety or a missed extra point, to land on them.
- 8 and 9: possible, but less common than 0, 3, 4 and 7.
Squares that pair two strong digits, like 0 and 7 or 7 and 4, tend to win the most. Squares pairing two weak digits, like 2 and 5, tend to win the least.
Why the draw keeps it fair
Since some numbers are better than others, the digits should be drawn at random after every square is filled. That way nobody can pick the good numbers, and every square has the same chance before the draw.
